This Friday, January 6th you are invited to the opening reception for the Salmagundi Club’s Junior/Scholarship Member’s Exhibition. (it’s from 6-8 PM) I have these five paintings in this show, which can be seen in the main gallery through January 20th. Founded in 1871, the Salmagundi Club is one of the oldest arts organizations in America. Back in the day, it was the center for social life among New York City artists and those visiting from around the world. Regulars included such great artists as Childe Hassam, William Merrit Chase, Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Ogden Pleisner and many others. Members would gather here to dine, drink, discuss art, sketch, and even hold boxing matches. Today the club remains virtually unchanged (although I haven’t seen any boxing matches yet) and it is a fascinating piece of New York City history that has been preserved. It is open to the public and I encourage anyone who is in West Village neighborhood to check it out! There are three floors and all the walls are packed with artwork.
47 5th Ave, New York, NY. Regular hours are Mon-Fri 1-6 PM. Sat & Sun 1-5 PM.
